Program for Enhancement of Water Productivity, Production and Sustainability of Irrigation Schemes (PEWaPPSIS)

Program for Enhancement of Water Productivity, Production and Sustainability of Irrigation Schemes (PEWaPPSIS)

This program aims at increasing operational efficiency and optimizing productivity of existing irrigation schemes for household food and nutrition security and incomes

It has four (4) components:  Irrigation Water Productivity and Efficiency Enhancement; Capacity Development for Enhanced Production and productivity; Schemes profitability and sustainability enhancement; and Enhancement of scheme water security, climate resilience and catchment conservation

Component 1. Irrigation Water Productivity and Efficiency Enhancement

This component aims at;-

  1. Determination of volume of water abstracted as measured and monitored against production levels realized at individual and scheme levels
  2. Reduction in amount of water lost during conveyance (volumes)
  3. Reduction in amount of water lost at user level (volumes)
  4. Additional acreage under irrigation as a result of water savings
  5. Scheme overall performance improvement from baseline data through implementation of corrective actions (18 IOF indicators)
Component 2. Capacity Development for Enhanced Production and productivity

This component aims at increasing; -

  1. No. of farmers’ practising irrigation production differently as a result of capacity building undertaken
  2. No. of schemes / farms producing double and triple cropping per year
  3. No. of farms reporting Increased productivity per acre of irrigated land
  4. Level of crop diversification, including BETA PAVC, HV Crops and nutrition
Component 3. Schemes profitability and sustainability enhancement

This component aims at; -

  1. Percent increase in profitability/ incomes / revenues from schemes
  2. Increased Scheme operational efficiency levels
  3. Increased Return on Investment from schemes and individual farms
Component 4. Enhancement of scheme water security, climate resilience and catchment conservation

This component aims at; -

  1. Maintaining adequate discharge/ water flows in the farms as per design
  2. Reducing siltation in the water body and irrigation systems
  3. Reducing incidences of upstream, downstream water conflicts
