Land Reclamation for Climate Resilience & Livelihood Enhancement

Land Reclamation for Climate Resilience & Livelihood Enhancement

The ASAL counties in Kenya have primarily relied on livestock keeping as their source of livelihood. However, with the continuous droughts being experience in the country, there have been tremendous losses of livestock and severe economic hardships for these communities.

The Government thus is in the process of establishing 450 feedlots in 31 ASAL counties with on feedlot per ward as a strategy to cope with severe drought conditions and strengthen the resilience of pastoralist communities.

Towards this end the State Department for Irrigation is expected to provide water for the feedlots by harvesting and storing water for irrigated pasture production with the attendant benefit of reclaiming underutilized or degraded land around the feedlot while at the same time ensuring sufficient hydration for the livestock.
