Ugoti Marega Irrigation Project – Igembe South, Meru County

Thursday, 18th September 2025
The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, today launched the Ugoti Marega Irrigation Project in Igembe South Constituency, Meru County. He was accompanied by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, alongside other senior government officials.
The CS noted that this is the first-ever irrigation project in the area, made possible through the Kenya Kwanza Government. Addressing a public baraza during the launch and public participation exercise, he emphasized that the project is designed to shield residents from the harsh effects of the sun, which have long hindered food production in the constituency.
The Ugoti Marega Irrigation Project will cover 800 acres, directly benefiting 800 households and indirectly supporting more than 4,000 households through expanded agricultural opportunities and job creation. Drawing water from River Ura, the scheme will ensure a reliable supply for farming, enabling the production of high-value commercial crops in addition to maize and horticulture.
This initiative is expected to enhance food security, improve farm incomes, boost agribusiness, and strengthen resilience against the effects of drought. The project is scheduled for completion in July 2027.
Also present at the event were Secretary for Administration, Mr. Yatich Kipkemei, MBS; Irrigation Secretary, Eng. Vincent Kabuti, OGW; Director of Irrigation and Drainage, Eng. Bernard Onyango; Director Daniel Odero; NIA Board Chair, Eng. Gilbert Maluki; NIA CEO, Charles Muasya; CEO of Tana Athi Water Works Development Agency, Eng. Philip Gichuki; Resident Engineer, Eng. Evans Lusi; Stephen Nyaga; Hon. Dorothy Muthoni, nominated Member of the National Assembly under UDA; and Meru County Deputy Governor, Linda Kiome, together with other senior national and county government officials.
