Drought Resilience Programme
The State Department for Irrigation, in collaboration with the National Treasury and the County Governments of Turkana and Marsabit, today held deliberations on the Drought Resilience Program in Northern Kenya.
Principal Secretary for Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, underscored the critical role the State Department is playing in ensuring the program is fully funded and implemented, given its importance in salvaging drought-prone areas such as Marsabit and Turkana.
Chairing the meeting, which brought together stakeholders both physically and virtually, the PS steered discussions on extending the project timeline by two years beyond December 31, 2025, to December 31, 2027, and on fast-tracking the financing agreement for an additional EUR 9 million.
The counties of Marsabit and Turkana presented progress reports highlighting the utilization of funds for dams, irrigation, and livestock projects.
The Drought Resilience Program in Northern Kenya is projected to deliver significant impact, directly benefiting an estimated 255,000 people, rehabilitating 5,000 acres of rangeland, and creating 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.
