H.E., the President Dr. William Ruto Inspects Kaihi Irrigation Project in Murang'a County
H.E. the President Dr. William Ruto, accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Eng. Eric Mugaa and Principal Secretary for Irrigation CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, inspected the Kaihi Irrigation Project in Murang'a County today.
The project, which began in February 2024 and is set for completion in February 2026, is now 86% complete. Once finished, it will expand the irrigation area by 1,600 acres, directly benefiting an equal number of farmers.
Speaking at a public gathering in Karugia, President Ruto emphasized the critical role of irrigation projects in Kenya's economy. He highlighted their importance in job creation, wealth generation, reducing agricultural imports, and increasing exports of high-value and cash crops.
The President also announced that alongside the completion of the Kaihi Irrigation Project, the government is constructing a modern market equipped with cold storage facilities to help farmers access better trading opportunities.
During the inspection, President Ruto participated in the thermofusion process to install water pipes that will connect farmers to the irrigation system.
Once operational, the project is expected to generate a gross annual margin of Ksh. 720 million from horticultural production. Additionally, it will create 2,000 direct jobs and 4,000 indirect employment opportunities while improving food and nutrition security for the scheme's beneficiaries.
President Ruto further pledged an additional Ksh. 30 million to support the Nyajenge Irrigation Scheme in Murang'a County.
