Drought Resilience Program in Northern Kenya

Drought Resilience Program in Northern Kenya

Frequent droughts has led to devastating effects on production potential, income, willingness to invest and food insecurity of the population. In addition, the lack of water supply and pasture are key development constraints. Public investment in infrastructure and services have been low for many years. Poor access to transport and marketing infrastructure and to public and private services are responsible for the precarious situation of the population.

The DRPNK(Drought Resilience Program in Northern Kenya) became necessary following bilateral negotiations between the Government of Kenya & Government of the Federal Republic of Germany held in Berlin in 2013, implemented under German Financial Cooperation. KfW and the Government of Kenya commissioned a Feasibility study in 2015. The study report found out deficiencies in water, pasture and livestock health by the pastoral communities living in northern Kenya that led to frequent conflicts over scarce resources and food insecurity.

The project will directly contribute to improving the livelihoods of the agro-pastoral communities living in the target areas and increase their resilience to drought.
