A courtesy call on West Pokot County Governor, H.E. Hon. Simon Kachapin, CBS, in Kapenguria

Irrigation Secretary in charge of Land Reclamation, Climate Resilience, and Irrigation Water Management, Mr. Joel Tanui, together with the Programs Secretary, Eng. Michael Thuita, this morning paid a courtesy call on West Pokot County Governor, H.E. Hon. Simon Kachapin, CBS, in Kapenguria.

West Pokot’s economy relies heavily on maize and potato farming, as well as livestock rearing, which remain central to the livelihoods of local households.

During the meeting, Mr. Tanui reaffirmed the Presidential directive to accelerate the rollout of 50 Mega Dams and 200 Small Dams nationwide. The proposed dam sites in Sigor, Turkwel, and Ebobut, part of the President’s flagship mega dams programme formed the basis of today’s visit.

He explained that the tour marks the beginning of reconnaissance surveys and preliminary assessments to determine the suitability of these sites. Findings from this phase will guide comprehensive feasibility studies, which are expected to be completed by January.

Mr. Tanui noted that the selection of dam sites will be guided by economic viability and bankability to ensure the projects can attract sustainable investment. He emphasized that irrigation potential will be a key consideration, as the dams are intended to significantly boost agricultural productivity. Sustainability will also be prioritised, with strategies to keep maintenance costs affordable for local communities.

He further highlighted the plan to involve private investors and, where possible, include components for domestic water supply. This multi purpose design similar to what is envisioned for Turkwel, is intended to maximise community benefits and strengthen the long term financial stability of the dams.

Governor Kachapin welcomed the initiative, noting the immense potential of the Turkwel region for expanded agricultural production. He expressed confidence that the proposed projects will greatly enhance food security and economic opportunities in West Pokot.

He also underscored the peace-building value of the programme, observing that reliable irrigation and fodder production can reduce competition over natural resources and promote lasting coexistence among neighbouring communities.
