Lower Kuja Irrigation Development Project


The Lower Kuja Irrigation Development Project is located in Nyatike Sub-County, Migori close to the shores of L. Victoria within the Lower Kuja River Basin. The project dates back to the 1980’s when various studies were planned and organized by the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA), who identified the potential for irrigation within the area along with supply of water from the Kuja and Migori rivers.

Between 2010-2011 a feasibility and detailed design study was carried out by GIBB Africa Ltd who were contracted by the National Irrigation Authority under the then Ministry of Water and Irrigation now Ministry of Water & Sanitation and Irrigation, State Department of Irrigation. The consultant submitted his report on February 2011, then the project was tendered in June 7, 2011 and the construction work contracted jointly to Frabo and Company Limited partnering with G.L. Williams Limited on February 17, 2012 where GIBB Africa Limited were the supervisor of the works to be done, the planned development was to be on 7,717ha of irrigable land.

  9. Over 556 canal and drain structures
  10. 212 km of farm access roads project facilities (offices, research & training center, staff housing and recreation facilities)
  11. The Board has advertised for the works and process of selecting a contractor is underway
  12. Targeting to put 1000acres under rice production in Block 1-1
