CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation  Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), EGH accompanied by Water Secretary Eng Alima, Chair NIA Hon. Eng. Joshua Toro, CEO NIA Gitonga Mugambi, and CEO Water Trust Fund and other senior officers from the Ministry and Water Sector institutions today launched the distribution and planting  of fruit tree seedlings at Nyumba Ya Wazee in Kasarani Constituency, Nairobi County. The fruit tree seedlings is an initiative by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, after H.E the President gave a directive that all parastatals set aside 10% of their Corporate Social Responsibility budget towards tree planting.

Today CS flagged off Lorries distributing   trees to Kiambu, Kajiado, Kirinyaga, Baringo and Machakos Counties. She planted the first Hass Avocado seedling at the Nyumba ya Wazee farm. She  also donated food stuffs, sanitizers and gloves worth about 300,000 courtesy of National Irrigation Authority and Water Trust Fund to the home which is taking care of 74 elderly people. So far, 360,000 fruit tree seedlings have been planted and the Ministry plans to distribute 800,000 seedlings to farmers across all the counties in liaison with county commissioners during this rainy season. This is in line with the Big 4 agenda on food and nutrition security as well as increasing household income.

CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H visits Kiirua Buuri and Mweru Umoja Irrigation Development projects in Meru County.


CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H visited Kiirua Buuri and Mweru Umoja Irrigation Development projects in Meru County. She was accompanied by CS, Ministry of Public Service, Gender and Youth Affairs Prof. Magret Kobi E. G. H and Governor of Meru County Hon Kiraitu Murungi E. G. H. They were received by the National Irrigation Authority Chairman Hon. Eng. Joshua Toro, CEO Gitonga Mugambi, among other government officers. They inspected the ongoing works and called upon the contractors to fast-track implementation of the projects to ensure timely completion for the beneficiaries to start utilizing the installed infrastructure for the intended purpose. They were pleased with the progress of the works in the projects and promised the residents more support towards achieving the Big 4 targets.


Kiirua Buuri Irrigation Development Project located in Buuri Constituency is targeting 1,250 acres to be used under irrigation. 2,500 farmers will benefit directly from this project once it’s completed by May 2021. Farmers will be able to grow Horticultural crops i.e. Potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, garden peas, and green maize with estimated average gross margins of KES 285,000.00 per acre per year.


Mweru Umoja Irrigation Development Project located in South Imenti Constituency is targeting 1, 000 acres to be used under irrigation. 1, 000 farmers will benefit directly from this project once it’s completed by March 2021. Farmers will be able to grow Bananas, tomatoes, French beans, Sweet potatoes, and Kales with estimated average gross margins of KES 255,000.00 per acre per year.


The development of irrigation projects plays a key role in achieving the Big 4 Agenda on Food and Nutrition Security.

CS visits Irrigation Projects In Nyandarua

CS MINISTRY OF WATER SANITATION & IRRIGATION SICILY K. KARIUKI (MRS) E.G.H VISIT TO IRRIGATION PROJECTS IN NYANDARUA..


February 12, 2021, CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H accompanied by National Irrigation Authority CEO Gitonga Mugambi and other officials from National Irrigation Authority toured Mumbi Dam Irrigation Project, Upper Gitwe Irrigation Project and Gwa Kiongo Dam Irrigation Project in Nyandarua County to assess the progress of the works in those projects.


Mumbi Dam Irrigation Project in Ol-Kalou sub- County has an acreage of 150 acres and once complete by May 2021 is expected to benefit 100 household farmers. 80% of the Dam desiltation is complete.


Upper gitwe Irrigation Project in Kinangop sub- County has an acreage of 200 acres and once complete by June 2021 is expected to benefit 300 household farmers. High value commercial vegetables are the main crops in the region. The project is 45% complete.


Gwa Kiongo Dam Irrigation Project in Ol-Kalou sub-County has an acreage of 500 acres and once complete by June 2021 is expected to benefit 1,000 household farmers. The project is at Review of the design and analysis of method statement.


The CS was pleased with the progress of the works in those projects. She notified the farmers that the Authority will train them on the best farming practices so that they can fully benefit from those projects as the government continues to implement projects meant to realize the Big 4.

NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IMPLEMENTATION TECHNICAL COMMITTEE PROJECTS ASSESED BY PRINCIPAL SECRETARIES.


A delegation of National Government Multi- Agency Team toured Thiba Dam in Kirinyaga County to assess the progress of ongoing works at the dam site. The team comprised of Principal Secretaries, PS State Department of Petroleum Mr. Andrew Kamau CBS, PS Education Post Training Mr. Alfred K. Cheruiyot CBS, PS Agriculture and Crop Development Prof. Hamadi Iddi Boga, CBS, representing the National Development Implementation Technical Committee, officers from the President’s Delivery Unit and the County Commissioner. They were received by the National Irrigation Authority CEO Gitonga Mugambi, the contractor, consultant, project manager among other senior officers.


They inspected the ongoing works and were pleased with the progress so far. They called upon the contractors to fast track implementation to ensure timely completion for the beneficiaries to start utilizing the installed infrastructure for food production as envisioned.


The National Irrigation Authority is overseeing construction of The Dam with the Consultant being a joint venture of Nippon Koei and Gibb Africa and contractor Straback International GmbH (Germany).


Once the Dam is completed, an additional 10,000 acres will be put under irrigation in Mwea Irrigation Scheme as well as provide sufficient water for double cropping of the entire 35,000 acres of the scheme per year.


Currently the overall physical progress of the project is 52% complete and is benefiting 700 employees (90% local and 10% skilled).


The contractor having extended the working hours for activities on the critical path (embankment and grouting works at the main dam) to catchup on the delayed progress, is expected to complete the project on December 1, 2021.

CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H visited Chersargat Marich Irrigation Development Project in West Pokot County. She was accompanied by West Pokot Senator and Senate Majority Leader Hon. Samuel Poghisio, E.G.H, County Commissioner Apollo Okello, the National Irrigation Authority CEO Gitonga Mugambi, and other officials from the Authority. They inspected ongoing works at the intake area and noted that its implementation is about 90% with the contractor promising to complete it in March 2021, 2months ahead of schedule. The CS notified farmers that the authority will train them on the best farming practices so that they can fully benefit from the project as the government continues to implement projects towards achieving the Big 4 targets.


Chersargat Marich Irrigation Development Project is located in West Pokot County, Pokot Central Constituency has a potential of 3,000 acres with the current phase set to have 600 acres put under irrigation. 3,000 farmers will benefit directly from this phase once it’s completed. Farmers will be able to grow Horticultural crops i.e. Potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, garden peas, and green maize with estimated average gross margins of KES 250,000.00 per acre per year. The development of irrigation projects plays a key role in achieving the Big 4 Agenda on Food and Nutrition Security.
