Embu County Commissioner and Irrigation Secretary Distribute Fruit tree seedlings among other Charitable Donations, Embu County.

Today the County Commissioner Embu County Mr. Abdulahi Galgalo accompanied by Irrigation Secretary Mr. Aboud Moeva and Mr. Nderi Ndiani from the CS office, Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation,  flagged off 10,000 Hass Avocado seedlings to be distributed for planting in Embu County.

Since inception of the initiative in 2018, a total of 4.7 million seedlings  are being raised by the National  Irrigation Authority in four schemes namely: Mwea, Perkerra, Ahero and Bura. The beneficiaries will include women and youth groups as identified by the County Commissioners in conjunction with their respective CECs.

This initiative will go a long way in increasing catchment conservation and increase the income of the farmers.  Upon maturity of the 800,000 fruit trees, it is expected that the fruits produced will have an estimated value of about KES 7 billion per year.

Alongside the distribution of the Hass avocado seedlings, the CS also sent Mr. Abdulahi Galgalo with a donation of food stuff and face masks to the Muslims in Embu town to boost them as they near the close of their fasting. The County Commissioner reminded the residents to follow the directives given by the Ministry of health and to always remember to keep social distance and wear a face mask.

CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation  Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), EGH accompanied by Water Secretary Eng Alima, Chair NIA Hon. Eng. Joshua Toro, CEO NIA Gitonga Mugambi, and CEO Water Trust Fund and other senior officers from the Ministry and Water Sector institutions today launched the distribution and planting  of fruit tree seedlings at Nyumba Ya Wazee in Kasarani Constituency, Nairobi County. The fruit tree seedlings is an initiative by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, after H.E the President gave a directive that all parastatals set aside 10% of their Corporate Social Responsibility budget towards tree planting.

Today CS flagged off Lorries distributing   trees to Kiambu, Kajiado, Kirinyaga, Baringo and Machakos Counties. She planted the first Hass Avocado seedling at the Nyumba ya Wazee farm. She  also donated food stuffs, sanitizers and gloves worth about 300,000 courtesy of National Irrigation Authority and Water Trust Fund to the home which is taking care of 74 elderly people. So far, 360,000 fruit tree seedlings have been planted and the Ministry plans to distribute 800,000 seedlings to farmers across all the counties in liaison with county commissioners during this rainy season. This is in line with the Big 4 agenda on food and nutrition security as well as increasing household income.

The CS, Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs) EGH accompanied by the PS, Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Joseph W. Irungu, CBS visited   the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project to inspect the progress of works in the 10,000 acre model farm today (August 26, 2020)

They were received by the Authority's CEO, Mr. Gitonga Mugambi  and other senior officers from the Authority.

They inspected the installed irrigation infrastructure and cropping activities on the model farm.

The CS expressed her satisfaction with the ongoing activities on the farm and encouraged continued growth of horticultural crops alongside maize as the government strives to achieve the Big 4 Agenda target on  food security and nutrition.

Today CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H accompanied by National Irrigation Authority C.E.O Mr. Gitonga Mugambi and other senior officials from the Authority toured Thiba Dam and Irrigation area in Mwea Irrigation Scheme.


The projects once complete is expected to put an additional 10,000 acres under Irrigation as well as provide sufficient water for double cropping in the entire scheme.
The CS was pleased with the good work done in the project since 2018 but was concerned with time lapse of the project. She ordered the contractors working with the National Irrigation Authority to develop strategies to cover up the lost time and ensure the project is delivered within the set timeliness.

 

 

 
 

200 acres of sorghum is ready for harvesting in Kolioro Irrigation Project in Turkana County with 120 acres of maize approaching harvesting. Expected yield in 90 kg bags is 8-10 and 10-12 for sorghum and maize respectively.
